The Sophistication of Sobriety

Updated: 22 hours ago

When it comes to alcohol, society often paints a picture of sophistication—think champagne flutes at celebrations, a fine wine paired with a gourmet meal, or sleek cocktail glasses clinking in candlelit bars. For many of us, these images create a deeply ingrained, and often limiting belief that drinking is synonymous with elegance and refinement. But what happens when you start to question that narrative?

In this blog, written by one of my community, Cat shares her journey of reflecting on her own beliefs about alcohol and sophistication.....

An issue that held me back for a long time was that I viewed alcohol as sophisticated.

I had a strong association with alcohol with success.  The decadent bottle of champagne was purchased for no good reason other than we could. The tasting menu that needed the expensive wine flight.  The £100 bottle of Margaux.  I want to be sophisticated so being that well-dressed woman who could walk into a bar and order an expensive wine fits that image.  You may think - how shallow- but I’m just trying to be honest and tell it how it was for me.  These images were very strong.  All I had to do was see a heavy white linen tablecloth and some beautiful shining glassware and I could feel the desire to drink and the pull of that desire to be “sophisticated”.

I had tried many times to rationalise this picture-perfect view by saying that it was a fantasy and the reality was messier.  You are not really all that sophisticated when you are drunk, repeating yourself, cannot remember how you got home etc.  - but none of that worked to change my view.

My big breakthrough came when I changed my image and belief about what sophistication really was.  I now think - what is more sophisticated than a well-dressed woman choosing not to follow the crowd and drink?  How sophisticated is the person in total control, enjoying an event without the booze, looking as fantastic and together when she leaves as when she arrived?  I can see it now and that is the kind of “sophisticated” I want to be - but it took that change of perspective to get me there.  And it was Ellen who posed the question that led to the breakthrough.

So my question to you is

What belief do you have that is holding you back?

Ask yourself - whatever it is that you think - what if the opposite was true? what would that look like and is that more in line with the person you want to be?

Why not give that a try and see if it creates a shift in you that helps?

Good luck my friend
